Building on experience in broadcast media, software engineering, and higher and secondary education, Phil currently focuses on developing his Geolocating Audio Tour web platform which won 2nd place as Most Innovative at NJDEP's 35th Annual GIS Map Contest in 2023. Outdoor venues anywhere in the world can subscribe (free to not-for-profits). Then their self-guiding visitors call up a web page on their smartphone to get a geolocating map and optional audio and picture messages at POIs along any route walked by the visitor. There's also a geocaching game that includes simulated radio tracking. Venue staff self-manage their Audio Tour text-to-browser-speech scripts, themes and other multimedia content. See https://nearbyreality.com for details and demo.
Phil's passion for software (and digital hardware) dates back to studying physics and philosophy plus spending hours in computer labs at Yale, experimenting with his own minicomputer and interfacing it to TV production devices in his spare time during early work years, and collaborating on technology design for a bioengineering project for his MS in Electrical Engineering (NJIT 2009).
Phil's most recent full-time employment was nearly 3 years at ETS as test developer primarily for AP Physics and also teacher licensure and other standardized assessments. In the prior six years he worked at several NJ public high schools teaching Physics, AP Physics, Physical Science, Contemporary Science, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Video, Digital Media, Technology Design, and Architecture. The prior five years were on administrative staff at two colleges, supporting and managing media technology. And before moving to education, for three decades Phil was an engineer and video editor in broadcast television in New York City, earning a Monitor Award (1992) and Daytime Emmy nomination (1996) for editing.
In his community, Phil interviews prospective students for his alma mater and participates in Long Branch's Green Team. In the past Phil chaired Westfield's inaugural Cable TV Board, was a member of Long Branch Cable TV Commission and NJ Loantaka Group Sierra Club board, and was board member and Social Action chair at his religious institution. He is a canoeing and sailing enthusiast, and enjoys living at the Jersey shore.
